Web Apps to Increase Productivity and Communications
Web applications are essentially software that is designed to run in a browser based environment. Unlike traditional software which is installed on each user’s computer, “web apps” are run from servers which deliver information to the user. Because these applications can be used by hundreds of users without requiring installation on hundreds of computers, they are cost efficient and easier to deploy and maintain.
Depending on the functionality desired, web applications can be built into a public website allowing visitors to perform specific functions or they can be designed for backend business needs. A key use for web applications is enhancing productivity which can be achieved by facilitating collaboration, communication, information sharing and by transforming existing business practices into electronic workflows. Our goal is to work with the biomedical science community to create web apps that can help to achieve specific organizational aims.
For years scientific data has been managed in spreadsheets and notebooks which can, overtime be overwhelming to manage and retrieve data from. An example of a web application that is designed to improve day to day processes is the Animal Inventory Management System (AIMS) which was designed and developed by RayyMedia. AIMS enables researchers to access and manage their inventory of laboratory animals online. The ability to centralize essential information and share it between lab members not only makes for more efficient processes but also helps to identify cost savings resulting from greater visibility of animals that are no longer needed.
